Underside: Podcast, Blog, Video & Track Release
‘Underside’ is a song about a lot of things: celebrating honesty & vulnerability, mental health, friendship, hope, intimacy, the joy of letting your mask down and the ancient truth that ‘blessed are those who mourn’.
Audiences have often said that they love hearing about the stories behind my songs, so it’s a real pleasure to be able to introduce you to my friend Rebecca Jackson, who I actually wrote ‘Underside’ for, during a particularly tricky patch of her healing journey from CPTSD (Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder).
She is a counsellor, budding author, Masters student in psychotherapy and my own personal wise sage. We recorded this podcast together, live at my artist Q&A before the ‘Underside’ single launch at Rough Trade, in collaboration with Time to Change; a national campaign to de-stigmatise talking about our mental health.
It was such a honour to collaborate with Rebecca and for us to share experiences & insights and bring you the nuggets of wisdom we have gleaned from this deep dive into healing and friendship.
I hope you love listening as much as we loved talking and we’ll hopefully have more conversations to share with you soon. You can listen to our full podcast below.
You can read some my personal reflections via an open letter to mental health featured on music blog ‘Thread’.
You can also check out the video below, stream the track and I will soon be releasing the live audio from the Rough Trade gig on bandcamp - so keep an eye out for that too!
Lastly, if you missed the gig you can get the lowdown from the wonderful review in Bristol 24/7 below.
Thanks again to all who came to the gig, took part in the Q&A and for all the wonderful feedback. I hope you enjoy streaming, watching and contemplating all the ‘Underside’ content at home during this time of self-isolation and please do share with all your friends and get in touch with your thoughts - we’d love to hear from you!
